Mulch

One of the simplest and most effective ways to give a garden a polished, healthy, and well-maintained look. It helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, regulate soil temperature, and improve soil quality as it breaks down. We use natural mulches in all of our gardens — each with its own texture, color, and feel.

Common Mulch Types We Use

Black Mulch

Rich and dramatic in appearance, black mulch creates strong contrast that makes flowers and foliage stand out. It’s dyed for color, which can fade with sun exposure over time.

Note: Black mulch tends to fade faster than other options and often benefits from a light top-up each year.

Shredded Pine Bark Mulch

A medium-dark brown mulch with a fibrous, natural texture. It settles well into beds and decomposes slowly, making it a durable, long-lasting option. Great for most ornamental gardens.

Pine Bark Nuggets

Chunkier and more textured, pine nuggets create a loose, woodland-style look. They don’t compact as much as shredded mulch, which makes them ideal for low-maintenance or larger garden areas.

Natural Compost Mulch

Dark brown to nearly black, this fine-textured, soil-like mulch is rich in organic matter. It’s not as tidy in appearance but offers excellent benefits for plant health and soil structure. Ideal for food gardens and restoration projects.

How Often Should You Mulch?
  • Black Mulch: Light top-up each year to restore color; full replenishment every 2 years
  • Shredded Bark or Pine Mulch: Every 2–3 years is usually sufficient
  • Compost Mulch: Annually, if improving soil health is a goal
How Much Mulch Do You Need?

Apply mulch at a depth of 2–3 inches for best results. Here’s a rough guide:

  • Small beds (100–200 sq ft): 1–2 cubic yards

  • Medium gardens (300–600 sq ft): 3–5 cubic yards

  • Larger properties (800+ sq ft): 6–10+ cubic yards

Note: 1 cubic yard covers roughly 100 sq ft at 3 inches deep.

How Long Does It Take to Mulch?
  • Small gardens: A few hours with one or two people

  • Medium gardens: Half a day to a full day, depending on layout and access

  • Large properties: 1–2 full days with a team of two or three

Timing also depends on how far we need to wheelbarrow the mulch from the drop point to each bed.
